God’s Design For Companionship

When sin entered the world, it interrupted God’s order and distorted the purpose of relationships.

From the beginning the Lord made everything good. One thing wasn’t quite so: Adam was alone. God fixed that. He fashioned Eve and presented her to Adam as his helper. She was perfectly and suitably made. Two humans brought together and blessed by their Creator. His creation was complete.

Companionship was something good for humanity from the beginning. It was God’s idea.

Marriage was an important and necessary part of the perfectly and orderly designed world. Not so today. Rather, we chose to pursue our dreams and our careers, and we see marriage as a threat to that. We choose pets as our companions for life and believe a lie that singleness is a gift.

The knowledge of God and His Word changes our perspective on marriage, helps us understand it and desire what God desires for us to have.

When we understand the Gospel correctly, we clearly see marriage in it: the bride presented to the bridegroom. We see the church and Jesus, sin and redemption. We see the goodness of it and the hope.

Marriage was designed to reflect our Savior’s sacrificial love for us. It’s the reflection of the long-suffering that produced patience and obedience in Jesus when He was a man.

Marriage is not optional, as we might think. It’s a part of God’s design for our life that accomplishes His plan for our sanctification.

Companionship within a covenant of marriage is a good gift that is to be desired and prayed for.

It changes our hearts, opens our eyes to who we are as sinners, and humbly brings us to our knees before our Savior.

Committing to marriage might seem frightening for some, but perfect love casts out fear.

The perfect love of God, that’s in us, changes our hearts and renews our minds. He helps us overcome the fear of discomfort, changed plans, and the unknown, and empowers us to boldly move forward towards what is good in the eyes of the Lord.

Desire what God’s Word says is good.

Desire His will.
