“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

I am  glad that you decided to read this post, because it is so important for us, Christians, not to be lost in this social media addiction era we are living today, but remain the light of the world God calls us to be. If not us, then who will?

Each of us is responsible for our own faith and will be accounted for one day when we meet Jesus face to face. I think about that often now, and more than anything else I am afraid of when that day comes, is having to come up with excuses why I did what I did even though I knew it was wrong.

That’s why I think that it is so important for us to start thinking about the consequences of using social media and how it affects our faith and our christian lives, and not to fall into the trap of addiction it causes, before it’s too late.

Let’s face it, we cannot imagine our lives without social media anymore. It’s become our lifestyle, our job, our family. It’s become our everyday life. Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with using Instagram or Facebook. Or both. In fact, they are such great tools to stay informed on a daily basis.

We look for a job online. We learn foreign languages or how to cook. We can find a bunch of educational stuff online and don’t have to bother to even leave our home. We watch pictures of our friends we don’t get to see in person that often. We stay informed on our daily church activities and updates from our church community through social media. It’s indeed a blessing to be a part of the information society we have today.

As Christians, we need to remember that we are fallen humans living in a sinful world, and not everything that we have access to is good for us. We need to remind ourselves that we are living in the world of sin where everything that is evil is portrayed as good.

HOW DO WE DO SOCIAL MEDIA JESUS WAY?

Remember your purpose. We live to glorify God’s name and that’s what we ought to do in every area of our life. Make sure that you don’t spend the whole day checking IG posts and wasting your time consuming info that doesn’t contribute to your spiritual growth. We consume lots of information that does nothing good to us but overwhelms us. Use God’s wisdom and choose what you read online wisely. Set your priorities. Don’t let social media become the place you go to to rest or find joy. It may become your idol without your even noticing.

Don’t judge others. Be humble. We see people post different kinds of stuff online which we think is inappropriate and start judging them. We thank God we are not like those people. We pray not to be like them. That’s what Pharisees did and Jesus condemned them! Remember that we are all sinners. Don’t judge because God is the only judge. Don’t use harsh comments. Don’t criticize others for their opinions. Don’t use sarcasm. Be gracious and loving in the way you interact with people even online. Stand by the truth but say it in love.

Share GOOD NEWS instead of brag about the good life you live. Jesus said we should tell the world about Him. He died for us to be transformed and able to do that. He did the hardest job. Now we are to do our part. Use your posts to express your faith and tell people about Jesus. Tell them about how your life has changed since you accepted him as your savior. The story of your transformation may become the beginning of the transformation of someone else!

Don’t rely on your fleshly strength and judgment when you go online, because you will fail and become like the world. Be filled with the Holy Spirit in every moment and every area of your life so that He could guide you in everything you do.

One day we will be able to ask Jesus’s opinion about social media. But until that day comes, let’s use it as a platform for being the light of the world and use it to glorify His name.
